I am taking out my remaining food budget for this month from the envelope. My heart beats a little faster as I count the bills and coins. I have confirmed the total. My current balance is 4,463 yen ($30). I have to survive the next 4 days with this money until my next payday. That’s about 1,116 yen ($7) per day. It’s going to be a bit of a tough battle. But I have a powerful ally. It’s this 10kg (22lb) bag of rice sent from home. As long as I have rice, I won’t go hungry. I only need to buy ingredients for the side dishes. I'm going to go shopping now. I've arrived at the drugstore. But I’m not here to buy daily necessities. My real goal is the food section. I've decided to survive the next 4 days on hot pot with my remaining 4,463 yen ($30). Hot pot is very healthy because I can eat plenty of vegetables at once. Even in a quiet room alone, it warms me to the core. Cooking it all at once also helps save on utility bills, like gas. For me right now, this is the most efficient and luxurious choice. I've made my way to the dashi (soup stock) aisle. This chicken and kelp dashi will be the foundation of my meals for the next 4 days. The price is 298 yen ($2.00). To balance out the cost of the dashi, I need something much cheaper. Next, I grab a bag of bean sprouts. This is the ultimate hero of my low-budget life. The price is only 28 yen ($0.18). It’s incredibly cheap, but it adds great volume to the hot pot. And here is the main star of my hot pot: Chinese cabbage. I found a quarter-cut for a great price. The price is 128 yen ($0.85). I've finished shopping at the drugstore.
