2026 Olympic Hockey Recap; Gold Medal Game and How Did the Sharks Players Perform?

Class is now in session. I'm Professor Hockey and today we'll be discussing the 2026 Olympic Games and more specifically the hockey tournament that took place at this event. And originally I was just going to discuss the Sharks players that were participating in this tournament. Regenda, Kurishv, Wenberg, and Mlin Celibbrini of course, but I would be crazy to not touch on the finals matchup that we just witnessed earlier today. The instant classic between team Canada and team USA. Now, coming into this tournament, I had originally believed that Team Canada were the slight favorites to win this. Not by a significant margin, but with the amount of talent and the elite elite talent that they can put onto the ice, it seemed like it would overwhelm the weaknesses that they had as well. Plus, they were coming off of the Four Nations victory just the year before. So, it seemed as though the momentum was on their side. However, as this tournament played on, my faith in Team Canada began to waver slightly. They had an incredibly dominant set of games in the preliminaries where they really just crushed team Czecha, team Switzerland, and team France, which got them the first seed out of that portion of the tourney. But when we moved into the playoff games, suddenly it became a lot more difficult, and suddenly those weaknesses were a lot more pronounced. in a rematch in the quarterfinals against Team Czecha, the team that they had previously beaten 5-0, they required multiple comebacks and a squeak out overtime victory in the threeon-ree just to be able to put themselves into a position to play for a medal. And then in that semi-finals game, they found themselves down 200 at the end of the first period against team Finland. and they had to scratch and claw their way back into it before winning off of a clutch late third period goal on a power play to get them into that gold medal matchup. And so they faced a ton of adversity heading into that final game. On the other side of things, Team USA were able to really cruise to this gold medal uh matchup. Yes, they did have the difficult head-to-head against team Sweden in the quarterfinals. But unlike Canada, who always had to play from behind, the US had the opportunity of playing from ahead. They were holding a one-goal lead for a large chunk of that game against Sweden. And while Sweden would tie it up late, which would force an overtime, it is a lot easier to play with a lead and the Americans were able to get it done in that overtime threeon-ree off of a goal from Quinn Hughes and then a semi-finals matchup that they just ran over against team Slovakia. And so actually going into the final matchup, I had swayed slightly.
