One of the most widely repeated phrases in the Vocaloid fandom right now is that every Miku is canon. House Miku, buzz ball Miku, jeans Miku, [music] and as Miku's popularity has surged, becoming such a prominent figure in the mainstream consciousness, there's been this big wave of people going back through the years of Vocaloid fan creations and celebrating just how many different versions of her exist. But there's one character who always gets stuck in that category despite not really belonging there at all. Because this this is not Hatsune Miku. She has the teal twin tails, she has the color scheme, but underneath that, quite literally underneath it, there's this grotesque mechanical skeleton, bony limbs that bend the wrong way, insectoid mandibles, a glowing red camera lens where one of her eyes should be. She's been a part of the Vocaloid community since 2009. She has an official licensing deal with Crypton and plenty of figures. And for a better part of 17 years, she's been a staple of the horror side of the fandom. Her name is Calne Ca, and despite spending the last 17 years being mistaken for a horror version of Miku, she's actually something a lot stranger. Even by Vocaloid fan character standards, Calne Ca is a genuinely unnerving creation. The first thing to understand is that she isn't actually a corrupted version of Hatsune Miku or like a virus Miku. The familiar twin tails, the outfit, even the face itself are all part of a costume. Beneath that exterior is her truer form. A mechanized skeleton known simply as Ca. She isn't a different version of Hatsune Miku, she's an entirely different entity dressing up as Miku. It's a pretty subtle distinction, but definitely an important one. The form that most people think of when they hear the name Calne Ca is just one expression of a much broader design. The Miku inspired appearance is a disguise laid over her actual body. It's like a kind of creepy cosplay. The underlying machine is very fluid. Everything about her is interchangeable. Her limbs, her body, her CPU. She can in theory be transplanted into an entirely different machine. She has no fixed hairstyle, no fixed clothing, no like true definitive version. She is, by design, amorphous. As a result, she exists in a lot of different configurations.
