hi everybody my name is Adam last week I did a tutorial on masking where I talked about masking from selections this tutorial will focus on manual masking methods using something like the brush tool and then next week what we'll do is we'll apply these skill sets using real photographic images and just showcase a practical application of them enjoy making a mask from a selection is one method by which we can isolate layers the second method is simply to add a mask to an active layer devoid of any selections to do this we'll remove our current mask that we made through the selection method notice that our mask layer returns to its default values of being displayed in full opacity to add a mask on its own we'll navigate to the adjust adjustment layer underneath the adjustments themselves click on the mask icon it will be located next to the duplicate icon when I do so a default mask is applied to my image it will appear to the right of my image layer this mask will look different from a mask made from a selection it doesn't have any instructions yet and is white by default meaning that the effect is turned on black would indicate that the mask is turned off black masks or parts of a mask that are black will present the pixels in that area as transparent and will result in US seeing layers we can interact with this white mask we do so by using the brush tool on the toolbar you will find the brush
