Tonight, East Bay Congressman Eric Swalwell suspends his campaign for governor amid allegations of sexual assault, and now even more pressure on the politician to step down. Also, a strong spring storm moving through northern California brings significant snow [music] up in the Sierra. This is KTVU Fox 2 News [music] at 6. And good evening, everyone. I'm Mike Niebaum. We begin tonight with that breaking news in the world of politics. East Bay Congressman Eric Swalwell announced just a few minutes ago that he is suspending his campaign for California governor. Swalwell is sharing this message out there on social media. It does read, "To my family, staff, and friends, and supporters, I am deeply sorry for mistakes in judgment I've made in my past. I will fight the serious, false allegations that have been made, but that's my fight, not a campaign's." Swalwell's announcement comes after two Bay Area representatives, Sam Liccardo and Jared Huffman, said yesterday Swalwell should step down. And today, Democratic Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal from the Seattle area said she supports efforts to expel Swalwell from the House of Representatives. from the Seattle area said she supports efforts to expel Swalwell from the House The New York Times is reporting the Manhattan District Attorney will investigate the incident involving a former staffer of Swalwell. She says the congressman assaulted her twice, including an incident at a New York hotel room in 2024. Swalwell denies the accusation. His campaign for governor had recently lost some support from key Democrats, including Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi and Senators Adam Schiff and Alex Padilla. Also today, more than 50 former Swalwell staffers signed a letter urging the congressman to resign from office and pull out of the governor's race. In that letter, the staffers praised the alleged victim and wrote, "Quote, we are appalled by his actions and stand firmly with you and every victim who has come forward." Earlier today, we did speak with UC Santa Cruz lecturer Nolan Hedden about where Congressman Swalwell goes from here. So, I think Swalwell at some point is going to step down. It's not just that folks who previously endorsed him, including politicians as well as labor unions, are backing out. Eventually, donors are going to start backing out.
