They want to return to China's historic strength . And part of that goal is to unite all Chinese people in one country . But taking Taiwan is incredibly complex. First of all , because the United States and its allies have a strong regional presence . China relies on trade routes near these military bases to import its energy . Over the past decades, they've grown increasingly reliant on imported energy with nearly a quarter being imported today . That's mostly oil and gas that shipped through the South China Sea , which makes it vulnerable to a maritime blockade . But also because in Taiwan, public opinion is skewed against reunification . And even if China could take the island by force , they would have to be able to resist years or even decades of Western sanctions . But China wouldn't be China if they didn't have a plan.
