Somewhere between the size of a proton and the size of an entire galaxy cluster, there are at least 17 different kinds of black holes, and most people have only ever heard of one. Some of them live for less than a heartbeat. One of them might be sitting closer to Earth than we'd like to admit. And by the time we get to the last one on this list, you might start asking yourself, what if right now we are already inside a black hole? Planck black hole. This is the smallest object physics allows to exist. So small that a single proton next to it would look the size of Jupiter. Its temperature sits at roughly 10 quadrillion times hotter than the core of the Sun, which makes it the hottest thing the laws of physics will ever permit. Now picture a camera shutter clicking open and shut in a fraction of a second. A Planck black hole lives and dies faster than that shutter can even close. Trillions of them could flash into existence and vanish again before the light from a lamp across your room reaches your eyes. It is not a short-lived object. It barely qualifies as an object at all. Primordial black hole. Less than 1 second after the Big Bang, before a single star or galaxy existed, pockets of the early universe were so packed with energy that space itself gave way and collapsed into black holes. Some of them are smaller than a grain of sand, yet a chunk that size would weigh as much as an entire mountain range compressed down to something that could hide under your fingernail. Here is the part that should keep you up at night. Unlike the Planck black hole, which dies almost the instant it is born, a primordial black hole from that first second could still be drifting through space today. Silent, invisible, and completely undetected, possibly closer to our solar system than anyone would like to admit. Kugelblitz. Every black hole so far on this list needed matter to collapse. This one does not. A kugelblitz is a black hole built entirely out of light. No dead star, no crushed core, just raw energy packed so tightly into one place that gravity stops caring what the energy is made of.
