January 21, 1793. A carriage surrounded by members of the French cavalry moves through the streets of Paris toward the guillotine site. When the vehicle reaches its destination, its door opens, and the prisoner is escorted to the place of [Music] execution. His hands are tied with a scarf. The executioner cuts his hair and removes his shirt collar. The prisoner turns to the crowd and declares: "I am innocent!" He tries to give a speech, but the drums begin to roll, ensuring his last words are unheard by anyone. It is around 10 AM. The condemned man is placed on the guillotine, and suddenly the blade falls, severing the prisoner's head. The executioner raises his arm and displays the condemned man's head to the crowd. [Music] It is none other than Louis, who had been one of the most powerful kings in Europe. It goes far beyond the death of Louis XVI or the famous storming of the Bastille. For a decade, France was the stage for revolts, political intrigues, coups d'état, and wars with other kingdoms.
