Yesterday, a massive police operation took place in Rio de Janeiro, considered the deadliest in Rio's history. Initially, they spoke of about 60 deaths, now they are saying 130 people died. I want to think about a few things with you, but I won't pretend to be a public security expert, because I'm not. I know many people suddenly become instant experts, which happens in these situations, right? One day they know everything about the war in Ukraine, the next about Palestine, and suddenly they know everything about urban security in Rio de Janeiro. People just know everything based on the news reports or social media of the day. That's not my case. I won't discuss specific aspects of the operation because I don't know them, but I will talk about the discourse surrounding it, how the narratives are being shaped around this operation, and how this reflects the way people and political groups want to mold our perception of this case. To do this, I'll first bring a recent report about this, talking about the new objective: to capture these people so they can be judged for the crimes they committed. Let's assume that among these 130 deaths, you can imagine there's everything, right? Even in the drug hierarchy, there will be people who are, I don't know, foot soldiers, and others who are messengers carrying notes from one place to another. So, all of them were killed and executed by the police. We have to consider that on one hand, you have some groups celebrating this operation, and some are trying to blame the federal government for not assisting. So, they are shifting the focus away from this disastrous operation, this extremely high lethality—it was a massacre.
