In this video, I’ll share a bit about São Paulo’s history. We’ll visit some key historical sites in the city. Let’s go back to the region where São Paulo is today—just like the rest of Brazil and the Americas—originally inhabited by Indigenous peoples. In 1500, Portuguese explorers arrived in Brazil in 1554. The Jesuits came to São Paulo with the goal of converting and teaching Indigenous people. Now, I’m standing in front of *Pátio do Colégio* in São Paulo’s center—this is where the Jesuits founded their mission in 1554. Around this college, São Paulo’s city developed, originally called *São Paulo de Piratininga*. Piratininga was the Indigenous name for this area. Next, I’m in front of the famous *Catedral da Sé*, built in 1954. Just in front of the cathedral is *Praça da Sé*, the city’s *Marco Zero*. *(Music)* In the 17th century, the *Bandeiras* expeditions began.
