An American submarine sunk an Iranian warship that thought it was safe in international waters. Instead, it was sunk by a torpedo. Quiet death. The sinking of an Iranian naval ship off the coast of Sri Lanka can be seen in heartstoppping video in which a torpedo fired by an American submarine triggers a massive explosion that took down the vessel. According to Secretary of War Pete Hegsth, this is the first time an enemy ship has been sunk by a torpedo since World War II. A single Mark 48 heavyweight torpedo was used in the strike, military officials said. Officials in Sri Lanka revealed that their navy received information that Iran's Iris Dino warship with 180 on board was under distress off its southern coast and that the island nation sent ships and air force planes on a rescue mission. So far, at least 32 people have been rescued and admitted to a hospital with one being in critical condition and at least 87 have died in the attack. As the search continues for more [music] survivors, according to Sri Lanka officials, the vessel had already sunk by the time Sri Lanka's [music] ships reached the location, leaving behind oil patches and life rafts, as well as people floating on the water. They said the Iris or Islamic Republic of Iran ship was on its way back to Iran from an eastern Indian port after taking part in a recent naval exercise held in the Bay of Bengal. The Iris Dino was one of Iran's newest naval vessels. The frigot, a medium-sized warship, was equipped to carry one helicopter. It was armed with heavy guns, anti-ship missiles, and torpedoes. Military officials also spoke along Hegathth detailing the dismantling of Iran's Navy since Saturday when the USIsrael operation epic fury began. Uh we've destroyed more than 20 uh Iranian naval vessels including in addition to uh to the uh frigot outside of the area uh one submarine and effectively neutralized at this point in time Iran's major naval presence in in theater out there.
