I want to play a game with you . I have put four books on the screen . Two of them are young adult books written for high schoolers and the other two are adult romance books written quite spicy . And you have 3 seconds to pick the two that are the adult ones ? Because they look exactly the same . If you've been on book or Amazon recently or gone into a bookshop , you'll know what I'm talking about . You've probably noticed that the romance genre is going through a major identity crisis . Everything literally looks like a poster for a Disney Channel movie . It all looks quite PG. I w . I would like to call this the cartoonification of romance because why is the industry dressing up some of their most spiciest books like they're made for a kindergarten classroom ? So, I went down a rabbit hole to figure out why . And it's actually quite genius , but it's also creating a massive problem . Right now, they're designing books to look friendly , harmless, and universally appealing . They are basically derisking the genre . And if you look at some of the best sellers right now , the love hypothesis, people we meet on vacation , the beach read, the Spanish love , they are bright, colorful, and aesthetic . And not going to lie, , they probably look good in a photo , but they tell you nothing about the book . And I mean, not just about the plot they don't tell you anything about the romance level . It almost feels like an algorithm designed these covers because if you think about it, cute font, yep , bright color, yep. cartoon looking characters
