Expedition 33 is an ambitious RPG filled with intense battles and captivating moments. And like any massive game, there's a lot you need to learn and quickly. My name is Kodiak. This is Legacy Gaming, and this is our ultimate beginner's guide for Clare Obscure: Expedition 33. We understand that a lot of you might not have Expedition 33 on your radar. That happens when a smaller development team takes a shot in the dark with a new IP sometimes flies under the radar. That being said, Livid and I have been hot on this game for quite some time. And after finally getting the chance to go hands-on 2 weeks ahead of launch, we put together a comprehensive beginner's guide for anyone that wants to learn more about the game before diving in. Expedition 33 is modeled after JRPGs and is most closely related to games like Final Fantasy or Lost Odyssey. It's incredibly narrative driven, and if you're looking for a captivating story that isn't afraid to push storytelling in some strange and dark places, then you might really enjoy this. What comes with singleplayer story focused games is a lot of linear progression. You'll spend a ton of time pushing through zones trying to get from one end to the other, but don't let that preconceived notion get the better of you. Within each zone are plenty of pathways and secret areas, and these often lead to some incredible things like weapons, upgrade items, pictos, and more. A fundamental tenant of JRPGs is to just be curious, and that absolutely holds true with this game. Outside of that, you have an overworld, something we've noticed is making a bit of a resurgence as of late. You can navigate the continent as you see fit, and this breaks out of the linear nature of the game, just enough to give you that sense of freedom. While exploring the overworld, you'll encounter wandering enemies, scattered items, and have the chance to explore side zones, which are smaller, but often hiding a powerful boss or an opportunity to obtain some new gear that otherwise would have been completely missed. As you explore each zone, you'll come across expedition flags, which are the game's version of a checkpoint or bonfire. For you Souls fans out there, resting refills your items, as well as respawns all enemies in the zone, minus boss-like enemies, of course. You do have access to a chroma elixir, which will heal up your entire team outside of combat, which you can use strategically to avoid resting, thus respawning enemies. Let's not parse words. Exploration is at the center of expedition 33, but it's not challenging.
